Giulio Massimo Gallana *1999
To me, art making is equivalent to living; It is the way we perceive, feel and interact in this world. Everything within and around us is part of the bigger artwork called life. My practice is represented by a body of work ranging from textiles, fashion, interventions in public spaces, to fine art. A background in textile design serves as the basis for my multidisciplinary practice.
Finding myself in awe by the beautifully paradoxical nature of life, I often delve into themes of duality - seeking to illuminate the transformative potential found in contrasts and the gray areas in-between. Life and Death is the most quintessential and obvious embodiment of duality, but also conservation and progress, the haptic and intangible, fiction and reality, the conscious and subconscious as well as beginnings and endings (…) are opposites that fascinate me. Nature’s inherent ability to learn, grow, and evolve, is also a big inspiration for me and is referenced often in my work. I strive to tap into this dynamic energy in my work by tuning into my own nature and trusting internalized knowledge and intuition. When it comes to making great art, skills and general life experience are secondary to the ability to express ones inner world, emotions and making yourself vulnerable. I've noticed that following an initial gut feeling and trusting the process oftentimes leads to the most authentic expression. But in order to be able to communicate your nature to the world in an adequate way, a certain level of skill is required. The more refined someones knowledge and skillset is, the more truthful the outcome can be. This approach to life compels me to continuously expand and question my horizon, and seek balance between intuition and reflection.
I currently live and work in Lucerne, Switzerland.
